Hi!
I like the viewer, but would like to be able to change the colors, the white is too clear, would prefer something more dark... and more contrast between choosen and not choosen things. (If we can´t change the colors, what about releasing two or three color combinations? This light one, a medium, more like LL viewer, and one darker.)
Plus, i miss the Run on Full Screen and bigger resolutions.
And... cant the IM window be made to use less space? all that unused space on the top line buggers me...
on the plus side, great that the chat history, is already separated, and no buttons down there, more that we can see.

As a seasoned SL user, and business owner in SL, I love this browser. After changing my usual settings, it runs exactly the same as the SL version, exept there is a bit more room in the Onrez client since some of the buttons were moved around, and because of that i dont feel the need to hide the top bar, so i have no problems getting right in to my inventory or in to anything else i need. Really the only suggestion i would have is to make the friends list more like the second life client in regard to the privacy controls.. i.e. *can see my online status* etc. In the second life client, at a glance i can tell who im hiding from etc lol.. With the OnRez, i have to go in to each contacts profile, then to the settings tab to see and control this. Seriously, thats about the only thing i would change. No stability issues to speak of.

Intel Quad Core 2.4!
Nvidia 8800 GTS OC!

Windows Vista (grrrr!)

Hi folks - I want to thank everyone for taking the time to post comments and questions about the OnRez Viewer. I'll answer some specific questions below, but I also want to mention that this is our first version and there's a number of improvements that we look forward to making. User feedback is helpful in that process.

Chat History: The chat history is re-sizable by dragging the edges. Its location is persistent in the bottom left hand corner.

Full Screen on Windows: We've disable full-screen on windows for technical reasons, the primary reason is that we found several bugs related to full screen mode. We hope to resolve those issues in a future version.

Crashes: If you're experienced crashes we encourage you to submit the crash report so that we can analyze the results. In addition, if you can reproduce the steps to cause the crash please visit our support portal and submit.

Vista: As does Linden Lab we do not currently support Windows Vista but many users have reported that it installs and runs fine if the correct video drivers are installed.

Linux: We do not currently offer a Linux version. This decision is based on resources and user population. We'll reevaluate in the future.

On Wednesday October 24, 2007 at 3:48 pm EST, I took the plunge and downloaded the OnRez SL Client (by the Electric Sheep Company). AT 34,874 KB it is similar in size to the SL default client. Here is my review:

I signed in using my existing account rather than creating a separate account via CBS, and when I signed in, I landed at the CSI Orientation Island. Following their 'orientation' was pretty simple and I made it through well enough to receive my CSI Badge *squares shoulders*. There were some people about, about 15 perhaps, and although I had my Second Life Mentor Tag active, nobody asked me any questions.

After the orientation, I followed the directions and moseyed on over to explore CSI's Central Park, where the crime scenes are, to gather evidence, but stopped in the middle to explore Second Life with this 'OnRez Viewer' - so much for my Detective skills *frowns at her inability to stay on SL task*. Teleporting to my home was no issue, attempting to set 'my home to here' did not result in the new viewer screaming at me .. which I expected because when I signed on with this viewer, I did read that the 'default home' is not active so it has to be set manually .. to assure all new members coming in via CBS land on the CSI Orientation Island. Every time I sign out my home is reset to the CSI Orientation Island, which is alright for the moment as I get to know this client.

I have thrown a shiny penny in an SL wishing fountain hoping that this will eventually stop and I can sign into 'my home', as I can do with the SL default client.

The OnRez Viewer does take a bit getting used to if you are like me and have spent a great amount of time learning SL's default client. Most buttons are in familiar places but some are different. The 'world map' button is embedded in the mini map, the 'Inventory' button is called "My Stuff" and calls to you from its top bar position, and the "shop" button gentle folds open to the Online OnRez store in an embedded browser; it is from here where one can type in any URL and browse away as you ignore everyone in SL. But most impressive are

1. the back button for Teleporting (it works as advertised - swoosh and wohoo - just make sure you wear clothes),
2. the adjacent map location entry - just type in a sim and press go and
3. the search next to it .. all conveniently on top of your screen begging you to explore and spend time and/or money.

So far the only bump in the whole process is the inability to 'detach and move' the main chat window away from the bottom screen area, but that of course could entirely be related to my inability to do so - yet; end-user error rather than a bump I would guess. I have been told that I can resize the main chat window, have done so and therefore was able to 'move' it about one corner at the time. All other interfaces are detachable and moveable so far.

No matter the difference between the 'clients' of SL, the OnRez's SL client is absolutely delightful in its simplicity. For now I will use it and learn it. I hope that many will at least try it out ... if nothing else to see first-hand (first-finger) what open source can accomplish.

A "thank you" to the Electric Sheep Company, and the internal team for developing it.

I'll be waiting for the non-CSI version... don't need any crappy TV show slowing down SL.
Any idea when the clean release will occur?
Thanks,

I agree with some of t'above ...

* Good points: cleaner interface, skinnability

However,

* Bad points: stability (5 crashes in 25 minutes, the last of which seemed to manage to take out my web connection for half the afternoon); security - a browser within the client is one thing, but I'm not sure about the wisdom of encouraging people to connect to https sites through it, given the bug ridden issues with the client; code-forking: Linden Labs signed up to open source, you've now beautifully forked the client's future development ... that last one is unforgivable ...

Having tried the OnRez viewer for the past day, these are the conclusions I've come to.

1. Buttons
For me, and I'm sure for a lot of other users running an in-world business, the three most important options in Second Life are Build, Inventory and Map. I use these every single minute, repeatedly. In the Linden Lab viewer, these three are available at a single click of a button. In the OnRez viewer, Inventory (My Stuff) takes two clicks when the navigation bar is minimized, Map takes two clicks when the minimap is minimized and Build takes a keyboard shortcut. After a while, that got slightly annoying.

2. Graphics & Interface
The OnRez user interface has a couple of neat solutions to the jumble of different pop-ups available in the Linden Lab viewer. Overall, though, I would like to see either an option to pick a slightly darker skin or in general just a move away from the steely gray and white. Especially the Build menu, with lots of relevant numbers and tabs, isn't easy on the eye.
Also, it could be my machine but I had the feeling the speed my surroundings were rezzed was noticeably slower than with the Linden Lab viewer. I've tried running both consecutively, within the hour, and visited two or three of the same sims twice. The OnRez viewer seemed to take longer.

3. Vast Improvements
There are two vast improvements in the OnRez viewer.
One, the teleport history. A nifty tool for experienced users who hate to pull up the map or a landmark once again to visit a place they just got back from. And possibly a life saver for new users: I remember I visited a few sims as a newbie that I wanted to get back to, but had no idea how I got there or where it was.
Two, the integrated web browser. Why open up Firefox or IE when you can read web pages while you are in-world? Once all relevant plug-ins work, this should be something very revolutionary, with lots of possibilities.

Just my two cents.

Hi OnRez Team,

I've downloaded the viewer over and over but I'm still getting a corrupted or damaged file error when I try to execute it. Do you have a mirror or an alternate download location?

Thanks!

I like this viewer ! Two suggestions: dark UI please for some of us, and a prominent Fly button. Thanks.

I'd love to give it a spin, but I'll have to wait for a Linux client before I can. Any idea about how long I'll have to wait?

Wendy - The registration issues are being addressed but our team and Linden lab. I think they have been resolved.

Autumn - You can minimize/hide the Navigation Bar at the top by clicking on the toggle on the far left "<<". I'll pass along your other comments.

Thanks,
Brewguy

Really wanted to enjoy this viewer, however feels a bit less responsive than the LL viewer, at least on my setup (on a mac here as well). Wish the colors of the UI could be customized a bit more (really not into the blue w/white background in dialog windows), and the the top bar feels like it crowds the view a bit (any way it can be resized?)

When I try to register a new avatar, the name comes up as available, but then I get a message that says I cannot register with that last name ID.
I have tried with several combinations of names, and I always get that error message and can't proceed.
