OnRez Viewer: Update

We’ve released an optional update to the OnRez Viewer today. This is the first in a series of updates we anticipate making. The new version addresses a handful of bugs and introduces two new features. We’ve gotten a lot of great feedback on the Viewer and will be taking that into account as we develop the next version.

The two new features are:

  • Voice Chat: Now when you start a person-to-person or group voice chat the Talk button will be depressed for you. Previously you had to click “Join Call” then activate the Talk button. Now there’s one less click.
  • The integrated Web Browser now has status text on the bottom left of the Browser window. It will report on page load status.

The bug fixes are:

  • Fixed Appearance Editor bug so that avatar will fully turn in most cases
  • Two letter Region names are now accessible via the location bar, general searches still require at least 3 characters
  • Fixed a bug in the Web Browser where the browser window appeared black until the browser window regained focus
  • Made several color tweaks to improve legibility and contrast

My review of the OnRez viewer, as I recently began using it:

Areas seem to load faster, things run smoother for the most part. The back button is one of those godsends that ive only had for a short time but already don’t know what I would do without it. Thank you! Integrated search and SL/web browsing is also a beautiful thing. Oh, and I cannot explain how nice it is to have the friends list button back and no communicate button fiasco. What were they thinking?

However, in a future release I would like to see the following:

    - A map button and a fly button. Maybe a customizable UI? The audio settings button can go as that just brings up preferences. Perhaps a customizable UI would allow users to push desired prefs to the forefront, instead of you choosing for us.

    - Removable chat bar! I play hockey on SL and that will force me to the LL viewer for games. Big problem, and I am not alone.

    - The ability at least to turn off keyboard camera controls. If I lose focus off of the chat bar I have to click it again or every time I try to type, I move or jump. Its annoying.

Please add Ctrl+T for opening and closing the chat window or i will not be able to keep using this Client over the original.

Hiroaki - Thanks for the feedback on Ctrl-T, I think it’s a valuable feature and we’ll be adding it back in our next release.

Ctrl+T is my main request, too; I’ve submitted it to ESC already.

A Map button, maybe on the minimap, would be nice. I actually don’t see much of a problem with the absense of a Fly button, after thinking about it. I mean, all the other avatar movement controls are in the Movement panel, and nowhere else - having Fly follow suit, makes some sense (I’ll take either format, though :))

As an idea for the integrated browser, tabs? “Open in new window”? :)

I dont understand why people want so many buttons on their UI that are also perfectly accessible by keyboard shortcuts. but i respect their view. for the remaining ones of us, like me, i say a turnoffable toolbar like in the sl main viewer would be nice :)

Adam - There are two ways to access the World Map from the Mini Map. The first is to click the globe button in the bottom right of the Mini Map. The second is to double click the Mini Map. Both of these will open the World Map. Thank you for your other suggestions, as I mentioned in my post we’re taking all feedback into consideration as we develop the next version of the OnRez Viewer.

    Thank You

What about making that chat history movable? I love the fact you can resize all of the windows completely (No clue what Linden was thinking with forcing a minimum size), but why did you fix the chat history to the far left? Or is it movable in a different method than the rest of the windows?

    @Atriel

the chat history window can be moved *anywhere* I discovered that a few days ago, just drag one edge then the other and so on, you can resize it and place it anywhere on the screen at any size and proportions.

Maybe I’m missing something but I cannot use voice chat with the onrez viewer. My voice button cannot be turned off. In other words, even if I click on the toggle button to mute myself, it doesn’t mute. Is there an easy fix to this?

My question is when are you going to publish the source as you are legally required to by the gpl

Hi Debra - I suggest re-running the Voice Setup Wizard in Voice Chat Preferences. In addition the default setting for the Talk button is in push-to-talk mode. To talk either click and hold that button or click and hold the middle mouse button (or whichever you have set for the push-to-talk trigger). If you’d prefer to be able to lock the microphone on open the Voice Chat Preferences and select “Use Push-to-Talk in Toggle Mode”.

Hi Gordon - The OnRez SL Viewer is commercially licensed software from Linden Lab. You can read more about it here:

In addition the OnRez Team continues to support the Open Source Viewer. Two examples of submissions:

I have been using OnRez viewer for a little over a week now and got a good chunk of people to download it over the weekend. The main thing I have been hearing from them is the lack of the option to use the viewer fullscreen. Is this something that is in the works?

Keep up the great work :D

Hi Stormy - As I mentioned before we’ve disable full-screen on windows for technical reasons, the primary reason is that we found several bugs related to full screen mode. We hope to resolve those issues in a future version.

    Thank You

[…] Thinking that it could be my computer that’s having some problem, I did some test to find out. I cleaned my registry, scanned for viruses, defragged my hard drives, etc. I also cleared my Second Life cache and even downgraded my Second Life client. Nothing worked, my computer still keeps on freezing. Even OnRez freezes my computer. […]

ctrl+u still works for things like textures but what about sounds ? animations? are they covered in the ctrl-u option?

Nahona, full screen mode has been disabled because the browser doesn’t work in full screen. Once they get that fixed, it’s likely that full screen mode will be returned to our Windows viewer. Full screen works on the Mac version.

    Hello OnRez,
I really like your version of SL-viewer and recomend it to mots people I meet. The main thing I miss is Ctrl-T for IM-window as mentioned above.

When do you plan for next release?
    Hugs
